Physicists Discover New Transfermium Isotope Lawrencium-251

Physicists have recently synthesized a new transfermium isotope lawrencium-251 and studied the α decay of lawrencium-253 in more detail. This is the first new lawrencium isotope synthesized directly over the past two decades.Physicists have recently synthesized a new transfermium isotope lawrencium-251 and studied the α decay of lawrencium-253 in more detail. Researchers Test High-order QED Effects with Many-electron Highly Charged Ions

Researchers have performed the precision DR spectroscopy measurement with fluorine-like nickel ions by employing the merged-beams method. The measurement builds a bridge which enables comparisons between different theories. The theory of quantum electrodynamics (QED) has achieved great success under weak electromagnetic fields in few-electron quantum systems. QED calculations are sensitive to high-order corrections wi...

Study Reveals Relationship Between Helium Behavior and Radiation Damage in MAX Phase Material

Researchers at IMP have recently reveal irradiation damage effects in MAX phase materials under different sequential co-irradiation of heavy ions and helium (He) ions. The results were published in Journal of the European Ceramic Society. Researchers at the Institute of Modern Physics (IMP) of Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) have recently reveal irradiation damage effects in MAX phase materials under different sequential co-irradi...

Laboratory Simulation Sheds Light on Mechanism of Solar-wind-induced Comet X-rays

Researchers at IMP have recently established an experimental platform for simulating the X-ray emission from comets irradiated by solar wind ions. With this platform, they studied the X-ray emission produced by highly charged ions bombarding the nickel surface. The results were published in European Physical Journal Plus on September 7. Researchers at the Institute of Modern Physics (IMP) of Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) have recently established an experimental platform for simulating the X-ray emission from comets irradiated...

Scientists Report a Solar Energetic Particle Event Observed by China's Tianwen-1 Mission

Researchers from IMP and their collaborators have reported a Solar Energetic Particle (SEP) event observed by the Mars Energetic Particle Analyzer carried on China’s TianWen-1 spacecraft. As the first scientific report based on MEPA, the paper was published in the Astrophysical Journal Letters on July 26. Researchers from the Institute of Modern Physics (IMP), Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and their collaborators have reported a Solar Energetic Particle (SEP) event observed by the Mars Energetic...

Physicists Reinvestigate Nuclear Excitation by Electron Capture Using Isomer Beam

To reinvestigate isomer depletion, researchers at IMP and their collaborators used an isomer beam to avoid contamination from the heavy gamma background. The significantly increased experimental sensitivity indicates that it is a promising approach for studying isomer depletion. A “dark” environment was created at the Radioactive Ion Beam Line in Lanzhou (RIBLL), China, to look for a faint flash of light as evidence of isomer depletion. Such depletion is required to harn...
