New Proton Capture Rate of Arsenic-65 Changes Periodic Thermonuclear X-ray Bursts

Researchers have computed a significantly revised proton capture reaction rate of arsenic-65 for the extreme astrophysical environments of accreting neutron stars, permitting astrophysicists to probe the mechanism of periodic thermonuclear X-ray bursts. Figure 1. A sequential two-proton capture on germanium-64 produces arsenic-65 and selenium-66 isotopes in the envelope of accreting neutron star during a thermonuclear X-ray burst. Researchers Report a Surface Modification Method to Improve Corrosion Resistance of Steel to Liquid Lead-bismuth Eutectic

Researchers at IMP used the shot peening process to nanocrystallise the surface of ferrite/martensitic steel SIMP, a candidate structural material for lead-cooled fast reactors. They investigated the corrosion behaviour of the SP samples exposed to liquid LBE, in comparison with that of the original coarse grain (CG) samples. Fig.1 Cross-sectional SEM morphologies of (a) the original and (b) the surface nanocrystallised SIMP steels after exposure to oxygen-saturated liquid LBE at 550℃ for 120 h. (Image by MA Zhiwei)

First Mass Measurement Using Rare-RI Ring Reveals Fine Structure of Element Abundance Patterns

Scientists have demonstrated the effectiveness of an innovative nuclear mass measurement method, using the rare-RI ring (R3) facility at Japan’s Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory, and applied this method to the mass measurement of a neutron-rich palladium isotope. Scientists at the Institute of Modern Physics (lMP) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and their collaborators have demonstrated the effectiveness of an innovative nuclear mass measurement me...

Scientists Probe Nature of Reported Low-spin Wobbling Bands in Atomic Nuclei

A research team led by the scientists at IMP has explored the nature of the reported low-spin wobbling bands in atomic nuclei. New investigation suggests that the nuclear wobbling interpretation is not feasible at low spins.Nuclear wobbling is becoming an intriguing subject as it describes a nucleus rotating around rotating axis in its body frame, in analogy with the precession in the macroscopic world. Since the firs...
