Postdoc Position on Theoretical Calculations of Precision Spectroscopy for Highly Charged Ions at HIAF
Postdoctoral Recruitment Announcement
Atomic Physics Center, Institute of Modern Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences
Project topic: Theoretical Calculations of Precision Spectroscopy for Highly Charged Ions at the High Intensity Heavy-ion Accelerator Facility
Work Locations: Lanzhou, Gansu Province or Huizhou, Guangdong Province, China
Project Overview
Supported by the high-precision Spectroscopy Ring (SRing) of the High Intensity heavy-ion Accelerator Facility (HIAF), a national major scientific and technological infrastructure, this position focuses on the frontier research of precision spectroscopy of highly charged ions. Aiming at the core scientific challenges including the hyperfine structure effect, strong-field quantum electrodynamics (QED), and multi-electron correlation in highly charged ion systems, this research carries out high-precision theoretical calculations of atomic structures and collisional processes, spectroscopic modeling, and physical mechanism prediction. The relevant theoretical results directly support high-precision atomic spectroscopic measurements at HIAF, enable accurate interpretation of fine energy level splitting characteristics of ions, and provide crucial theoretical support for verifying fundamental physical laws and exploring new physical effects beyond the Standard Model.
Responsibilities
1. Perform theoretical calculations of electron-ion collision processes for highly charged ions.
2. Develop or apply relativistic atomic theory methods and provide high-precision theoretical predictions tailored to experimental needs.
3. Analyse and interpret spectroscopic data obtained by the experimental team at the SRing.
4. Write scientific papers and present research results at domestic and international conferences.
Qualifications
Educational background: A PhD degree (or to be obtained shortly) in physics, with specialisation in atomic and molecular physics, theoretical physics, or a closely related field.
Professional background: Solid knowledge of atomic physics, quantum mechanics, and spectroscopy. Preference will be given to candidates who are familiar with the energy level structure of highly charged ions or atomic spectral theory.
Computational skills: Strong programming capability, with proficiency in at least one computational language (e.g., Fortran, Python, C++). Experience in independently developing or using atomic structure calculation codes is highly desirable.
English proficiency: Excellent reading and writing skills, with the ability to independently write scientific papers in English. Good spoken English for effective international collaboration.
Other requirements: The candidate must abide by laws and regulations, adhere to research integrity, possess good team spirit, and meet the institute's regulations regarding avoidance of close relatives.
Application Procedure
Application deadline: The position is open until filled.
Required documents: Please send your curriculum vitae (including a list of academic achievements), representative publications, an abstract of your PhD thesis, and two letters of recommendation to the contact email address.
Interview process: Shortlisted candidates will be notified within one week after the initial review. Interviews can be conducted online or in person, as appropriate.
Position nature: Postdoctoral researcher (project-based employment).
Remuneration and Support
Salary and benefits: The remuneration will follow the standard postdoctoral salary scale of the Institute of Modern Physics, including five social insurances.
Housing: A postdoctoral apartment will be provided.
Research environment: The appointee will be deeply involved in cutting-edge research at the HIAF-SRing, with abundant opportunities for domestic and international academic exchanges, and participation in the most advanced lectures and training in the field.
Career development: Support will be given to apply for national postdoctoral talent programmes (e.g., the Postdoctoral Innovative Talent Support Program, the National Postdoctoral Program, and the CAS Special Research Assistant Program). Outstanding candidates upon completion of the postdoctoral term may be given priority for permanent research positions at the institute.
