Abstract:

We theoretically show that the conventionally and broadly employed theoretical treatment of electronic-rotational couplings for molecules in intense laser fields driving vuv/x-ray transitions breaks down already at moderate intensities and fails to correctly predict important observables. This finding is of extreme importance owing to the recent developments in high-intensity light sources, and the need for accurate comparisons between theory and experiment. Our proposed universal description of both the weak and strong fields successfully captures the previously missing physics, can be easily implemented, and can be verified experimentally in, e.g., the angular distribution of photofragments in diatomics.
