High-performance Standardized Solid-state Power Amplifier Passes Field Test

Chinese researchers have lately developed a kind of high-performance standardized Solid-state Power Amplifier (SSPA), which passed its field test on September 11 in Chengdu.
The expert panel conducted tests on SSPA and modules, and verified the interchangeability of modules. The experts concluded that the researchers at the Institute of Modern Physics (IMP) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) have proposed an advanced standardized design concept, and that the domestic substitution of SSPA has been realized and the main goals of standardization have been achieved.
The China initiative Accelerator Driven System (CiADS) is one of China’s major science and technology infrastructure projects, which is being constructed by IMP. CiADS will be the world’s first prototype of an ADS facility at megawatt level, aiming to explore safe and proper nuclear waste disposal technology. Developing industrial applications of large-scale accelerators was highly stressed in this project.
To meet the challenging requirements of accelerator’s industrial application, the researchers at IMP have implemented a pioneering standardization approach, and have completed the entire design of SSPA. They collaborated with prominent domestic and international firms to develop standardization technologies and the essential components.
By using domestically produced third-generation semiconductor (GaN), the researchers greatly enhanced the output power and efficiency of SSPA at frequencies below 1 GHz. Moreover, the standardized design allows for seamless compatibility among power amplifier modules from various manufacturers, thus improving the maintainability.
This accomplishment laid a solid technical foundation for industrial applications of particle accelerators in scientific research, medical treatment, advanced energy, etc.
