May 06 - 10, 2013
Meeting Room 911 at Building 5#
Institute of Modern Physics, Lanzhou, China
The aim of the workshop is to bring together scientists working on topics directly related to laser cooling of relativistic ion beams at storage rings. Laser cooling at storage rings is a multi-disciplinary topic that requires the combination of techniques from laser physics, accelerator physics, particle beam diagnostics, optical diagnostics, data acquisition and synchronization as well as fundamental plasma theory.
The workshop should help to prepare German-Chinese laser cooling experiments. It is intended to cover laser-cooling and related subjects in several presentations over the period of two days. It will be valuable for participants to discuss the experimental possibilities at the Lanzhou storage ring facilities.
In the mean time, GSI and IMP are planning their future large-scale heavy-ion facilities, FAIR in Darmstadt and HIAF in China. Both sides have common interest in the precision physics program, laser cooling, accelerator construction, development of new instrumentation, novel diagnostics, and, in particular, training of young generation of scientists and engineers. The workshop will give an overview of the state of the art of laser cooling at storage ring facilities and the prospects for future high-energy storage ring facilities such as FAIR and HIAF. It furthermore addresses all technical aspects relevant to conducting successful laser cooling experiments at large-scale storage ring facilities. The workshop will pave the way to facilitate the efficient use of the manpower, the potential of the present facilities, especially in the construction phase of FAIR. Furthermore, it will push the research works in precision measurement in nuclear physics and atomic physics for both sides as well.
