CAS Visiting Professor Appointment to Dr. Umberto Lombardo
On July 12, 2011, Dr. Umberto Lombardo was awarded the Visiting Professorship for Senior International Scientist of Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) in recognition of his exceptional scholarly merit and extraordinary efforts to collaborative research with the Institute of Modern Physics (IMP) of CAS over years.
Dr. Umberto Lombardo is a professor of Catania University and a professor of Southern National Laboratories of the Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare (INFN-LNS), Italy as well. Prof. Lombardo investigated the equation of state (EOS) and single-particle properties of asymmetric nuclear matter together with his collaborators for the first time within the microscopic many-body Brueckner-Hartree-Fock approach in 1991. He is also a pioneer in the study of nucleon superfluidity in neutron matter and neutron star matter with outstanding accomplishments.
During his visits at the IMP, Prof. Lombardo conducted collaborations with the research staff from the IMP about subjects of theoretical nuclear physics, including the properties of isospin asymmetric nuclear matter and microscopic nuclear many-body approaches, effective nucleon-nucleon interactions in asymmetric nuclear matter, nucleon superfluidity in neutron stars. He has also given lectures on nuclear physics to the graduate students of the IMP.
The Visiting Professorship for Senior International Scientist of Chinese Academy of Sciences is the CAS’s top recognition for outstanding cooperative work. The award was created in 2009 honoring the foreign scientists’ exceptional scholarly merit with a primary emphasis on the collaboration with their Chinese partners to advance the research at the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
