High energy heavy ions at low flux in cosmic radiation are of particular concern to human’s space exploration, because they have high linear energy transfer (LET) when interacting with matters. These heavy ions can produce single event effects (SEE) in semiconductor devices, which can cause loss of control and defects in spacecraft. In addition, the high LET ions can induce complex DNA damage in living cells, and as a consequence may result in cell death and cancer induction, thus threatening the health of astronauts. The group has two main research subjects. One focuses on the application of microbeam to the SEE study and material analysis; the other is the application of microbeam to radiobiological study, including DNA damage and repair, bystander effect and low dose effect study.
